Feb 8 2006

Please list two reasons teens might engage in risky behavior

Please list two reasons adults might engage in risky behavior (smoking, no seat belts, safety features missing in their home, etc.)

We talked about a story I had published about a neighbor who lived very dangerously. You can read it at http://www.holisticwisdom.org/hwpages/community.html

Please comment on why he may have lived the way he did, how that contributed to how he died, and if there might have been something that could have been done to prevent his dying the way he did.

_______

Feb 9

Think about each of the four reasons you have for the assignment for 2-8 and explain how this behavior might be changed – how can we get teens and adults to act more safely? List at least four strategies.

_____

Feb. 15 2006 due March 8

Choose a food item from home that has a nutritional label. The more odd the food item is the more fun this will be.

Using this guide

http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/foodlab.html

Read the label. How many servings do you usually consume at a time? Given how many servings you usually consume, in which areas would you be consuming more than 50% of the suggested daily intake? What nutritional concerns would you have for this product? What is good about it? Back to the food you chose, what are the ingredients and do you know what they are? List the ingredients with a yes or no beside each one.

Read the article thoroughly and tell me is it well written? Easy to understand? Do you usually read labels on food? Find a parent or friend and explain to them what the label means and how it can be used to choose good food. Where you able to explain it?

___________

Feb. 16 2006

Read the article I gave you and briefly answer these questions:

Questions for the article project, 10th grade health

What is the article about?

What are the major points of the article?

What are some of the conclusions the author makes?

Do you agree or disagree? Why?

Is the author suggesting any change in behavior? What and Why? What do you think?

What is your experience with this subject?

What do you believe is the most important part of the article? The least important?

____________

Mar 1 2006

using the food pyramids I handed out, give a two sentence critique of each one. How are they different? What is the best thing about it? What would be a problem for you?

March 8 2006

Watch the movie "The Future of Food" available in the library

_______________

Mar 9 2006

Either have a 10 minute conversation with me on the movie, or write 3 paragraphs on what you thought of the movie, the important points, and what surprised you about the movie.

Mar 15 2006

If you missed the lecture on birth control and abstinence:

1--Go to: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/pp2/portal/files/portal/medicalinfo/birth control/pub-bc-choices-teens.xml

2-- Read about the birth control options

3-- Watch the movie – “Know the right way to put on a condom?” (the link is on the right side of the web site about 3 inches down)

4-- Answer these questions and turn in the answers to me (Someone in the office can put it in my mailbox)

What methods are not suggested for teens and why?

Which methods also help protect against STIs?

How can you be certain to prevent pregnancy?

List three of the important steps in using a condom effectively

Go to http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=581663 and read pages 1-8 and the last two pages of the article. Be prepared to discuss it tomorrow.

Mar 16 2006

Either have a 10 minute discussion with me about the article, or write 3 paragraphs answering these questions: Do you agree this would be a good law? What are some concerns and questions you have? Is sex dangerous? Why or why not? What might be different about first time sexual encounters?

Mar 22 2006

If you missed the lecture on Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

1-- Go to: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/pp2/portal/files/portal/medicalinfo/sti/pub-sti-facts-2.xml#chlamydia and read about the different types of STIs. Use “next “ at the bottom of each page to continue – there are four pages total.

2-- Answer these questions and turn in the answers to me (Someone in the office can put it in my mailbox)

Which of the STIs are viral?

Which are bacterial?

Which can be cured?

What are some common cures?

What is the most common STI?

When you are ready to have sex, what would be your primary health concern and why?

Pregnancy

Sexually transmitted infections

                        Other (please specify)

Mar 23 2006

The information that we recently covered on birth control, abstinence, and STIs used to be illegal for public school teachers to even mention. I’d like to hear your opinion on if this should be taught in public school, why or why not, do you think 10th grade is the right time, and what should be included or excluded in a sex education curriculum at this age.

About three paragraphs would be fine.

Mar 29 2006

March 29

(turn in your baby visit paper)

Talk to two of your classmates about their experience visiting the new parents. Answer these questions in a short paper: What did they learn from the experience? Was anything surprising to them? After talking to the parent you interviewed, and the opinions of the parents they interviewed, what do you think is a good age to have a baby and why?

The rest of the class we’ll be talking about birth. Either read 3-4 accounts of childbirth, or talk to two people who will tell you about their birth experience (one can be your mom). One of the stories could be this one on my web site http://www.holisticwisdom.org/hwpages/malpresentation.html

Write a short (one page is fine) paper on what you learned.

Mar 30 2006

There is no make up for this class.
