Visit New Parent(s) assignment Due March 20th

The task:

Arrange a visit to a new parent or parents with a baby less than 6 months old.

The visit will take about an hour.

You may visit someone you already know, or I will provide you with a name.

You may make your visit with one other student, or by yourself. If you visit someone together, you will still each turn in your own assignment.

There are two parts to the visit – helping with simple tasks around the house, and interviewing one or both of the new parents.

Special precautions

If you are sick or think you might be getting sick, you will need to postpone the visit.

When you first come into the house, ask to wash your hands before you touch anything – and especially before you come near the baby.

Ask before you touch or hold the baby. Some parents may not be comfortable with you handling the baby, and that is fine.

Wear clean clothes, and no perfume or cologne.

Let your parent, guardian, or me know where you are going and when.

What you can do at the home

Simple tasks include folding laundry, mopping floors, hand washing dishes, loading the dishwasher, picking up (esp. if there are older children in the house), wiping down counters and cupboards, make the bed, dusting, straightening, clean the bath tub, take out the garbage, folding diapers, sorting recyclables. The parent should have some idea ahead of time. The ideal is to spend about 30 minutes

The interview

Your written paper will answer these questions:

*What is a typical 24 hour time period like? How much time is spent playing, sleeping, feeding, cleaning, and other activities for the baby?

*What are some of the significant costs of having a baby? What are some costs that were unexpected?

*How has having a baby affected your sleep?

*What has been the best part of having a baby? What has been the most challenging?

*Do you have free time for yourself? What do you like to do in your free time?

*What were some of the factors that went into deciding to have a baby?

*What does the parent believe is the ideal age to have a baby and why?

*What new ideas or information did you (the student) learn from this experience?

If there is a question they would rather not answer, that is fine, just make a note of it.

The paper

Your written paper should be at least one page, answer the above questions, include the full contact information on who you visited, age of their children, how much time you spent with the tasks and with the interview (list separately), and what specifically you did to help the family.
